Facts
Darcel Howard (defendant) and her five-year-old daughter lived with Howard’s boyfriend, Edward Watts. For several weeks, Watts regularly and severely beat and tortured Howard’s daughter with a belt or strap. At no time did Howard attempt to stop Watts or report him to the authorities. During the course of one beating, Howard’s daughter fell and hit her head on a piece of furniture, and died as a result. Howard was charged with and convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
