Facts
The state (plaintiff) prosecuted L.M. (defendant) for aggravated sexual battery when he was 16 years old. L.M. made a motion for a jury trial, and the district court denied the motion. The juvenile court found L.M. guilty of aggravated sexual battery after a bench trial. The juvenile court stayed L.M.’s term of 18 months in a juvenile correctional facility and placed L.M. on probation until he was 20 years old. The court also ordered L.M. to register as a sex offender and to complete sex-offender treatment. The Kansas Court of Appeals affirmed the district court’s denial of a jury trial, and L.M. appealed to the Kansas Supreme Court.
