Facts
Strong Steel Door, Inc. (the company) (defendant) fired its employee, Carlos Huerta (plaintiff). Huerta sued the company to recover the value of his labor. The company discovered that Huerta, an alien, had provided false documentation of his eligibility to work in the United States. Huerta did not dispute this fact. The company moved for summary judgment on the grounds that Huerta entered into an unenforceable illegal contract and that Huerta’s unclean hands precluded him from equitable relief. The trial-level supreme court denied the company’s motion, and the company appealed to the supreme court’s appellate division.
