Facts
John Huntington (defendant) was a wealthy 47-year-old man when he married Ann Huntington (plaintiff), a 28-year-old dental hygienist. Ann then quit her job. During their marriage, which lasted three years and seven months, Ann became accustomed to an affluent lifestyle. Later, Ann filed for legal separation. The trial court awarded Ann spousal support of $5,000 per month for a period of six months. Ann appealed, seeking to challenge the trial court’s limitation of the support period to only six months. The California Court of Appeal granted certiorari.
