State v. Reeves
Tennessee Supreme Court
916 S.W.2d 909 (1996)
- Written by Sara Rhee, JD
Facts
Tracie Reeves (defendant) and Molly Coffman were 12-year-old girls who attended the same middle school. On the night of January 5, 1993, Reeves and Coffman agreed over the phone to kill their homeroom teacher, Janice Geiger, with rat poison. The next morning, Coffman took a packet of rat poison to school. During the bus ride to school, Coffman told another student about the plan. The student told school officials once she arrived at school. Geiger noticed when she arrived in her classroom that Reeves and Coffman were leaning over her desk. They left a purse on Geiger’s desk next to her coffee cup. Authorities found rat poison in the purse. Both Reeves and Coffman were found guilty of attempted second-degree murder.
