Definition

A federal court deriving its power from Article III of the Constitution, which provides for jurisdiction over cases arising under the Constitution and laws of the United States, cases in which the United States is a party, and cases between citizens of different states, among others. Under Article III, federal judges (i.e., district court judges, court of appeals judges, and Supreme Court justices) have lifetime tenure.
