Chevron Test

Chevron Test

Definition

A two-part test to determine whether a court should grant deference to a government agency’s interpretation of a statute. The test first asks whether Congress has directly addressed the issue. If it has not, then the agency’s interpretation is valid if it is a reasonable interpretation of the statute. This test was first applied in Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 (1984).
