Definition

The ethical rule that prohibits unreasonable legal fees or expenses. Factors determining reasonableness include the (1) time and work required, novelty and difficulty of the questions involved, and skill required; (2) likelihood that accepting the matter will preclude work on other matters; (3) fee customarily charged in the locality; (4) amount involved and results obtained; (5) time limitations; (6) nature and length of the lawyer’s professional relationship with the client; (7) experience, reputation, and ability of the lawyer; and (8) fixed or contingent nature of the fee.
