Definition

An amount of money that one spouse is legally obligated to pay the other for the purposes of paying back the receiving spouse for money or other value contributed during the marriage, including sacrifices the spouse made during the marriage that directly increased the future earning capacity of the other spouse. Reimbursement alimony may also be called compensatory alimony or compensatory maintenance.
