White v. White

North Carolina Supreme Court

324 S.E.2d 829 (1985)

Facts

Lawrence White (plaintiff) and Jean White (defendant) married in 1951 and separated in 1980. Lawrence had a college degree and worked in agricultural-equipment sales. Jean was a registered nurse. Shortly after Lawrence and Jean were married, Jean quit her job and became pregnant, and by 1954 the couple had two children. The couple agreed that Jean would devote her time to child rearing, which greatly benefited Lawrence’s career because he traveled extensively for his job. Jean also worked part-time in the communities where they lived, and in 1970, she became a full-time occupational nurse with the postal service. Lawrence filed for divorce in 1981. The trial court awarded each spouse an equal share of marital property, and the court of appeals affirmed. The wife petitioned for review, arguing that she contributed more to the marital estate, particularly in nonfinancial contributions and in significantly greater income between 1975 and 1978.
