Zippo Test

Zippo Test

Definition

Test devised in Zippo Manufacturing Co. v. Zippo Dot Com, Inc., 952 F. Supp. 1119 (W.D.Pa. 1997) for assessing whether minimum contacts have been created by the creation and maintenance of a website; under the Zippo test, highly interactive websites allowing users to purchase items most likely would create specific jurisdiction, websites with limited interactivity would require close scrutiny by courts before a determination of personal jurisdiction could be made, and wholly passive websites that may give the user information but provide little or no opportunity for interaction would not give rise to specific jurisdiction.
