The criminal law recognizes different categories of theft. Today, we'll discuss three of them: larceny, embezzlement and false pretenses.
I. Elements
Under the common law, larceny is defined as the trespassory asportation of another's personal property with the intent to permanently deprive that person. We should note from the outset that it doesn't matter whether there is any benefit to the person who takes the property; if the elements of the crime are met, larceny is established.
