We’ll begin our chapter on landlord-tenant law by looking at the tenant’s estate in land and the accompanying contract, or lease, between the landlord and the tenant.
In a landlord-tenant relationship, the landlord gives the tenant a temporary interest in land, called a leasehold estate. This estate gives the tenant the right to possess the property. In exchange, the tenant pays rent.[Restatement (Second) of Property (Landlord and Tenant) §1.2.]
